Monster Energy Pro Circuit Wilson & Bagget on Podium

February 14th, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

Corona, Calif. (February 14, 2011) – Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Dean Wilson and Blake Baggett started off the AMA Supercross Lites Eastern Region with podium finishes at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. Wilson battled for the lead and eventually finished second, while Baggett came from 12th to round out the podium in third.

Out to prove he can be a championship contender, Wilson started out the day well with fast qualifying times that translated that into a heat race win. In the main event, he got out front early and battled back and forth for the lead, and eventually finished second.

“I had a lot of fun racing again,” said Wilson. “It’s been a while since Pala and I am excited for the season to start. I am not fully 100 percent with my endurance since my injury in December, but I know it won’t be long before I’m able to push it for the win. Atlanta should be good and I’m really looking forward to getting back out there.”

In his first year aboard the Pro-Circuit backed Kawasaki KX™250F, Baggett entered the race in Houston more prepared than ever to show he was capable of being on top. Baggett had to use every lap of the 15-lap main event after starting 12th, but made an impressive push to finish on the podium in his first race of the season.

“I’m not really a fan of the short starts like we had in Houston,” said Baggett. “I know my bikes fast and I have been working on my starts. I don’t like coming through the pack because it can get pretty intense sometimes, but I did my best to salvage as many points as possible. I’m pretty happy considering I had to come from the back, but next race I really want to be up front.”

The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki eastern region riders will get a one-week break while the west coast riders make one last appearance this weekend at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego before going on a break until April.

TiLUBE Racing Houston Race Report

February 14th, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

Advance, NC (February 14, 2011) – TiLUBE Racing’s Matt Boni was looking good in his heat race until he crashed hard in the whoop section. He was well within qualifying position in the top ten and moving up when the crash occurred. Manuel Rivas sat out the race due to injuries sustained while racing at the Anaheim II event.

In his heat race, Matt Boni was in inside the top ten when he crashed. The crash was so intense it crushed the bike’s radiator causing Boni to DNF (Did Not Finish)

Boni’s bike was repaired just in time for the LCQ race. He got a poor start and had to work his way up from the back of the pack to 5th place. It was an impressive effort, but not enough to make the LCQ cutoff.

“I felt good out there but the results do not reflect where I should have finished. I have to stay on two-wheels for the whole race to score the points. All I can do is learn from the crash and do better the next time,” commented team rider Matt Boni.

After six rounds of the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross Series, Matt Boni is back in 18th place overall in the standings.

The TiLUBE Racing team’s next race is Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. The 450 supercross races will be televised on February 19 at 10:30 pm ET on SPEED and the Lites class will air February 20 on SPEED at 4 pm ET.

Caselli Dominates Ridgecrest Hare & Hound

February 14th, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

FMF/KTM Factory Team rider Kurt Caselli dominated the second round of the AMA Hare & Hound Series held in Ridgecrest, CA when he crossed the checkered flag 8 minutes ahead of the next closest competitor.

The weather was perfect for the second round of the series with temperatures in the high sixties. In typical Hare & Hound style the track was incredibly dusty as it had not rained at the race location in quite some time. The course was made up of three loops. The longest loop was the first at 48 miles with a second loop of 31 miles and the final loop a short 17 miles.

Caselli initially had a bad start, unable to fire his bike right away. He eventually got off the line about 5 seconds behind the group. The dust was so thick at that point, that he had to veer from the original line he had picked down the bomb run. As they neared the final stretch of the bomb he was able to move back into his original line. Feeling more comfortable in his chosen line, he worked his way up into 3rd place before they headed to the narrow single-track.

Shortly into the first loop Caselli caught and passed the 2nd place ride of David Pearson. A few miles later the leader was within his sight. As the race continued Caselli closed the gap on current leader Kendall Norman to about 10 seconds. As Caselli closed in, Norman took a spill and handed the lead to Caselli before the halfway mark of the first lap. Once in the lead, Caselli charged forward at an incredible pace. At the 48-mile mark, and the team’s first gas stop, Caselli had already laid down a 4 minute lead.

Caselli continued his pace on the second loop and doubled his lead before the next gas stop. Now 79 miles into the race, Caselli had an 8 minute lead on the competition. For the remainder of the race, Caselli maintained his pace and went on to safely cross the line and take the win by over 8 minutes on the rest of the field.

“It feels really good to get a win here after an unlucky result at the first round. My bike ran flawless today. Factory Connection made some suspension improvements between the last race and this round that helped a ton and overall it was a great ride today,” commented Caselli.

With two rounds down, Caselli currently sits 2nd in overall points just 9 points away from the lead spot in the title chase. The next round of the AMA National Hare & Hound Series will be held in El Centro, CA on March 6, 2011.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 13, 2011) – Houston is one of the longest running stops of the AMA Supercross Championship, hosting the series annually since 1974. The 45,859 fans that packed Reliant Stadium experienced the most exciting race of the season thus far.

When the gate fell for the 20-lap main pandemonium broke out when a first-turn pile up claimed several riders, including Brayton. By the time the chaos was sorted out Brayton was nearly a lap down and began the race in 19th. Meanwhile in a breakout performance, Millsaps was at the front of the field in second position. Millsaps rode an inspiring race battling in podium contention until just the last two laps finishing a 2011 season best in fourth place. Millsaps also turned in the fastest lap of the night, clocking a 48.800 as compared to the race winner’s best 49.138. Brayton made a determined effort to come back from the first turn melee and was able to salvage 13th position at the checkers.

JDR/J-Star/KTM Houston Race Report

February 14th, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

JDR/J-Star/KTM rider PJ Larsen proved why he’s a two-time Australian National Champion after turning a top qualifying time and earning 2nd overall in his heat before a crash ruined his night at the opening round of the AMA East Lites Supercross Series in Houston, TX.

Larsen got the crowds attention at the start of the day when he tied Blake Baggett for the fastest lap time in the first timed practice. Larsen maintained his pace in the second timed practice finishing 6th overall within one second of the top five. “I didn’t expect everyone to be so close in practice. It’s going to be a close race tonight and the start is going to count big, so I am crossing my fingers to be out front early,” remarked Larsen after practice.

In his heat, Larsen pulled a 4th place start off the line. He quickly passed Jason Anderson to move into 3rd. Once inside the top three he began to close in on the front two riders, Darryn Durham and Dean Wilson. While the top two battled out front Larsen closed the gap and with two laps to go jumped over Durham to push his way into 2nd place. Wilson maintained the lead while Larsen applied heavy pressure. On the final lap, Larsen pushed hard and finished in 2nd right on the rear tire of Wilson.

“I was happy with my heat race result. I didn’t get that great of a start but I was able to make up for it within the first few laps. I was glad to run with Wilson and am looking forward to the main event,” stated Larsen.

Larsen, who had pulled some impressive starts while racing in Australia for his team earlier this year, appeared as if he might duplicate that off the start of the Lites main. Larsen nearly grabbed the holeshot coming together with Malcolm Stewart as they crossed the first jump side by side. Larsen settled for 2nd off the start and immediately began to pressure Stewart. As they made their way to the back half of the track, Stewart cut hard under Larsen taking both riders to the ground and a few more riders behind them. Larsen was slow to come up but eventually remounted and returned to the track in 17th.

“When I recovered from the crash with Stewart, I realized real quick that my rear brake lever had been smashed in the crash. I tried to ride a few laps before pulling off the first time to fix it,” stated Larsen. He pulled into the mechanics area on the fifth lap. He was able to kick his brake pedal back toward its normal position and then returned to the racing action approximately one lap down. A few laps later, Larsen’s brake pedal broke off and he had to finish the race without any rear brakes. “It was so hard to ride without the brakes but I wanted to stay out there as long as I could to try to salvage any extra points possible.”

Larsen eventually finished the main event in 18th. “I’m definitely disappointed that I crashed in the beginning of the race, but its all part of racing and now I am just looking forward to redeeming myself at the next round.”

Larsen’s teammate, Tye Simmonds, also had a day of bad luck. Simmonds, who competes in the SX class, came down with bronchitis earlier in the week. “I have been incredibly sick the past five days and was not able to ride at all this week,” remarked the JDR/J-Star/KTM rider. Simmonds struggled throughout the day as he tried to push past his sickness. “I feel horrible today but I am doing my best to rest during the week and am really hoping this disappears by next week so I can have better luck in San Diego.”

Simmonds will return to California to race the seventh round of the series in San Diego, CA next weekend while Larsen will have a two week break before returning for the second round of the East Lites SX at the Atlanta Supercross on February 26th.

BTOsports.com/BBMX/Palmetto Suzuki Oakland Race Recap

February 2nd, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

BTOSports.com/BBMX/Palmetto Suzuki’s Thomas Suffers Tough Luck in Oak-Town

The BTOSports.com/BBMX/Palmetto Suzuki team rider Jason Thomas can be accused of a lot of things like bring vertically challenged, liking Rocky IV too much and being a little serious on race day but one of the things that no one can say about him is that he doesn’t give it his all out on the track. The long-time privateer is a favorite of many fans and fellow racers because of the honest effort he gives out on the track.

This past weekend at round four of the AMA Supercross series in Oakland, California, Thomas went out there and just missed out on a direct transfer to the main in his heat by placing tenth. Being one spot out of making it to the main meant the dreaded Last Chance Qualifier where only the top two made it in.

“I was feeling pretty good out there really and I’ve dominated the LCQ’s in the past so I know I could win” said JT after the race “But unfortunately, I got a bad jump off the gate and in that race, the start is everything.”

And with that bad start went any chance of a main event on this week for Thomas (who has made two out of the four so far this year) and he’ll go to Anaheim this weekend with one thing on his mind-revenge. Kind of what Rocky was going after the death of Apollo in Jason’s favorite movie.

If you want to get a real cool behind the scenes look at SX and be a part of everything, sign up on the BBMX website to be a SX VIP. Walk the track, hang out with the riders, be a part of the team and much more. Check it out!

TiLUBE Racing Matt Boni Takes 12th at Oakland

February 2nd, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

Advance, NC (February 1, 2011) – TiLUBE Racing’s team improved their results in Oakland, California when Matt Boni finished inside the top 15 in the main event of the Monster Energy Supercross Series. The conditions were wet in Oakland and the track was rutty but that didn’t stop the TiLUBE Racing team from posting their best results this season.

The practice session started a little rough for Boni with a nasty crash in the whoop section. The whoop section of the track was giving a number of riders trouble and the series management ended up changing them. Boni qualified in 17th place with a best lap time was 48.398 seconds putting him in 17th position. Rivas posted a best lap time of 49.826 seconds putting him in 27th place.

Both riders raced in the second 450 heat race, Boni finished just inside the nine transfer positions with his 8th place finish. Rivas was not in a transfer spot with his 13th place finish.

Rivas advanced to the LCQ for his final shot of the evening to make the main event. His 5th place finish would not qualify him to race in the main event.

Boni had a poor start in the main event race, but he quickly worked his way through the pack of riders and into the 12th position.

“I am pleased with my results this past weekend. Even though they do not reflect where I think I should be, we made the main and picked up some valuable series points. After a not so great start I put my head down and rode a smooth race without mistakes which is what I needed to do. I am really excited going into Anaheim II,” commented team rider Matt Boni.

After four rounds of the 2011 Monster Energy Supercross Series Matt Boni is in 18th place overall in the standings.

The TiLUBE Racing team’s next race is Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. The 450 class races will be televised on February 6 at 6 pm ET on SPEED and the Lites class will air on SPEED at 5 pm ET.

DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing Oakland Results

February 2nd, 2011 RK EXCEL No comments

Oakland, CA. (January 29, 2011) – AMA Supercross rolled up the coast of California during the week to a partially rain free Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and did battle before 44,394 fans. DNA Shred Stix/Star Racing/Yamaha featuring #35 Kyle Cunningham and #72 Nick Paluzzi we’re both feeling fresh, and in Timed Qualifying it showed when Cunningham went out and nailed down the 2nd fastest time, and following behind was Paluzzi netting 18th.

Heat #1 had both Yamaha pilots lined up on the gate; Cunningham managed to get a great start seeing him hold down 5th position coming around the awkward first turn. Sitting upfront for Cunningham was short lasted, as he had moved into 3rd and began applying pressure to the leaders Kyle lost the front wheel in the sand section and was forced rejoin the race in a mid pack position. Paluzzi got pinched off coming into turn one, setting the scene for both teammates to race their way through the field. Knowing the pressure was on to qualify directly into the main event, Cunningham and Paluzzi battled hard, and avoided making mistakes. In doing so, they were able to bounce back to respectable 6th and 7th place finishes.

The Main Event headed out for a grueling fifteen laps, with Cunningham and Paluzzi not getting the starts they needed to contend for the podium. Unfortunately Cunningham once again was a victim of hard luck when a falling competitor’s bike tangled inside of his rear wheel, forced to stop and pull the bike out in turn one, the determined Texan was far from throwing in the towel as he held down 19th. With both teammates deep in the field, Paluzzi 14th and Cunningham putting in some of the fastest laps who had made his way to 11th on lap eight. This night would be highlighted by the charge of Cunningham, who solidified his potential by racing to 7th at races end and we should see him right in tow with the leaders here really soon. Paluzzi would go on to have a race of gaining experience, and at the checkers he would take home 13th for the night.
