Red Bud National – Buchanan, MI
July 4th, 2009
We were all excited to be back on the track at Red Bud and looking forward to a great weekend of racing. The weather was beautiful and the air was buzzing with excitement as the Fourth of July weekend was upon us. We would have two riders on the track this weekend, Antonio Balbi in the prestigious 450cc division and myself, Ryan Clark, in the 250cc class. Both Antonio and I easily qualified into the afternoon motos, so the stage was set for an Independence Day battle royale.
Antonio had a pretty eventful day of racing which began with a great start in moto one. Early in the race he collided with another rider while battling for a top ten position and went down. He remounted way back and began his charge. Unfortunately, his moto ended prematurely with a flat tire at around the halfway point.
Moto two went better, although he was forced to battle back from a lackluster start. Nevertheless, Antonio kept his head down and made his way inside the top twenty for a seventeenth place moto finish at the end of the 35 minute moto on one of the roughest tracks of the year.
I had high hopes entering the weekend for my fourth ever attempt at a 250cc National. In the first moto I snuck around the inside of turn one and managed a top twenty start. I battled hard and moved up inside the top fifteen at one point, before having a small mechanical related problem that dropped me back to seventeenth.
The second moto started off awesome. I rounded the second turn inside the top ten and moved into sixth by a few turns in. I lost some positions over the next five laps, but was holding tough and feeling great. I was around 12th at the halfway point of the moto when the wheels came off. Although I don’t remember much, I crashed hard and knocked myself out. In the wreck, I also did significant damage to my thumb. It was a bad way to end the day, but it could have been much worse.
Antonio’s score of DNF/17 was good enough for 20th overall on the day, while my tally of 17/DNF awarded me 22nd overall in the 250F class. Thank you to everyone for your continued support and we will see you at the races!
